The College of Liberal Arts is proud to offer these scholarship opportunities to current students including students who participated in study abroad as well as first generation and new transfer students. See below for more details on these scholarship opportunities. Fall Semester Deadlines
CLA Transfer Student Scholarship
The College of Liberal Arts is pleased to award three $1,000 scholarships for new transfer students this fall. Funds will be dispersed in the spring semester.
To be eligible for consideration for this scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be a new undergraduate transfer student (started at MTSU in Fall 2023)
- Have a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts
- Be a full-time student (minimum 12 credit hours)
- Minimum Inclusive GPA 2.75 (can be accessed via “GPAs” link in Pipeline)
- Minimum 2 semesters of full-time enrollment at an institution of higher education (excluding dual enrollment), with a minimum of 24 earned credit hours (excluding dual enrollment)
- Student can submit a personal statement and a letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member in support of the application. A letter of recommendation can be uploaded as part of the application or emailed directly from the faculty or staff member to Meredith.Dye@mtsu.edu.

Howard and Carolyn (Jump) Slatton Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes the achievements of Dr. Yvonne “Bonnie” Slatton, an outstanding female academician, in hopes of inspiring others to pursue a degree with an interest in a Liberal Arts discipline. Click here to read Bonnie’s biography. Funds will be dispersed in the spring semester.
To be eligible for consideration for this scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Be a full-time undergraduate student in the College of Liberal Arts.
- First preference will be given to a student majoring in a Liberal Arts discipline, second preference to a student with a Liberal Arts minor.
- Have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Student can submit a personal statement and a letter of recommendation from a College of Liberal Arts faculty member or advisor in support of the application. A letter of recommendation can be uploaded as part of the application or emailed directly from the CLA faculty member or advisor to Meredith.Dye@mtsu.edu.

Friends of Liberal Arts Endowed Scholarship
This endowment wa established for the purpose of providing scholarships to students in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), to promote engagement in service to CLA and their departments, and to represent the values of the liberal arts by addressing community concerns and social problems through service at Middle Tennessee State University.
To be eligible for consideration for this scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Student must have a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts.
- Have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Demonstrate service to the College, to their department, and/or to community/society by addressing a problem through service and incorporation of liberal arts values.
- Submit a one-page essay based on a question to be determined by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Scholarship Committee.
- Essay Prompt: Liberal arts skills such as creative problem solving, critical thinking, and collaboration are a key part of everything we do. Describe how you have used liberal arts skills to better serve your department, campus, and/or community.
- Submit a Recommendation Form that has been completed by a MTSU faculty/staff member or individual who can discuss your service accomplishments.

Spring Semester Deadlines
CLA Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship supports students who are going to participate in one of the many MTSU Signature faculty-led study abroad programs and other international education experiences (i.e.–exchange programs, program providers, internships, etc.).
Eligibility:
- Student must have a declared major in the College of Liberal Arts.
- Undergraduate students must have completed at least 15 of credit hours earned at MTSU. Graduate students must have completed 9 hours prior to the semester in which the award will be made, with all 9 hours earned at MTSU.
- Student must have a GPA greater than or equal to 2.0.
- Student can submit a personal statement and a letter of recommendation from a Liberal Arts faculty member or advisor in support of the application. A letter of recommendation can be uploaded as part of the application or emailed directly from the CLA faculty member or advisor to Meredith.Dye@mtsu.edu.

Geraldine Sayward Scholarship
The Geraldine Sayward Scholarship will be awarded to the student of any major in the College of Liberal Arts preparing for an International Education Abroad experience who has shown excellence in academics and who best exemplifies the personal attributes of Geraldine, which include her passion for international travel abroad and lifelong learning. Click here to read Geraldine’s biography. To be eligible for consideration, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Have cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
- Have declared a major or minor in Liberal Arts
- Have completed at least 30 credit hours
- Preference given to a student participating in an MTSU faculty-led Education Abroad program
- Submit a personal statement (no more than 750 words) explaining how your life reflects the values modeled by Geraldine Sayward and how these values will influence your education abroad experience. Also include details on the activity for which you are requesting support and how the activity will contribute to the plan of study.
- Submit a letter of recommendation from a Liberal Arts faculty member or advisor. It can be uploaded as part of the application or emailed directly from the CLA faculty member or advisor to Meredith.Dye@mtsu.edu.

Elrod Family Scholarship
To be eligible for consideration for this award, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- A student whose parent(s) did not receive a bachelor degree
- Be a full-time student pursuing an undergraduate degree major in the College of Liberal Arts and have completed at least 60 credit hours
- Have an overall minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the time of application
- The scholarship may provide funding for an international educational experience that supports the student’s degree program
- Each award is for one academic year or summer term. Prior recipients are not disqualified from consideration for this award during subsequent years. Should the recipient become ineligible to receive the funds, another candidate may be selected using the criteria above.
- Student can submit a personal statement and a letter of recommendation from a Liberal Arts faculty member or advisor in support of the application. Mary Foye Huhta Memorial Scholarship
Recognizing the professional contributions of Mary Foye Huhta and the desire to encourage others to emulate her achievements, women and minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. To be eligible for consideration for this award, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Have an overall minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the time of the application
- Have declared a major in the College of Liberal Arts, with an expressed interest in participating in government, local politics, and civic engagement
- Have completed at least 60 credit hours
- Be a full-time student
- Preference given to a student who has completed a credit-bearing internship or experiential learning activity related to government, local politics, or civic engagement, or who otherwise shows evidence of involvement in government service, local politics, or civic engagement
- First preference will be given to a resident of Rutherford County.
- Applicants must submit a 1 – 2-page personal statement outlining the internship or activity which the student has completed and how the activity has contributed to the student’s professional development or plan of study in government, local politics, or civic engagement.
- Submit a letter of recommendation from a Liberal Arts faculty member or advisor. The letter of recommendation can be uploaded as part of the application or emailed directly from the CLA faculty member or advisor to Meredith.Dye@mtsu.edu.
