My Liberal Arts Story
Everyone who studies the liberal arts has a different story about what it means to them. The College of Liberal Arts seeks to share the stories of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Our campaign to collect and share experiences with the “My Liberal Arts Story” initiative launched in February 2020. If you would like to share your liberal arts story, please email cla@mtsu.edu.
“For 40 years, I have been extolling the virtues of my education at MTSU. No matter the context or situation, the thoughts of my years at MTSU always brought a smile to my face, a feeling of immense accomplishment, and a warm nostalgia for all things Blue Raider.”

“At MTSU, I found some of the most talented and caring educators I have ever met in my life. Till this day, they serve as monuments on how to treat others no matter their class and status. Lalo and Julie Davila, percussion professors, taught me the importance of rapport and passion. They reignited my hard work and pushed me with just a few words of encouragement.“

“Liberal arts empowered me to fulfill the calling I have always known by allowing me the space I needed to grow. Through my Communication Studies education, I have learned over and over again how to consider the perspectives of other people, creatively solve problems through cognitive flexibility, and—most importantly—develop the ability to display true empathy by stepping into pain with others and walking out with them hand-in-hand.”

“I am reminded often of the value of my liberal arts training, and I lean on it daily. My education taught me to think critically, creatively, and collaboratively and to approach decision-making thoughtfully and with empathy for those who would be impacted by my choices. I also acknowledge the many transferrable skills gained and used routinely, especially listening, communicating clearly, coordinating with others, negotiating, and organizing.“

“Without my liberal arts education, I would not have been prepared to honor my parents and my Thai heritage in the US. I wouldn’t have been able to go through a significant personal event in my life that called upon my whole being to fulfill. An experience does not end with an event, it only matures with the passage of time into wisdom, and thankfully, I have my liberal arts skills to grow with the experience for the rest of my life and the ones after.“
